From a sand management point of view, production of heavy oil from unconsolidated formations poses different challenges than in conventional oil and gas production. Production of large quantities of sand is critical for maintaining good well productivities in heavy oil reservoirs. Thus provoking sand onset and encouraging sand production are essential aspects of oil production.

This has also necessitated the development of special pumping systems for the transport of fluid with high solid content. Our state-of-art formulation on sand erosion is fully coupled to our existing reservoir-geomechanics model. For the first time we can quantify the sand volumetric rate, yet the model is based on classic geomechanics.
